Working Principle

A narrow electromagnetic frequency pulse of 40ns - 6us with a fast rise time is sent on the cable that reflects back from the fault point /far end where the impedance shows mismatch or change. The velocity of propagation (VOP) for each cable depending on the cable dimension and material is set and the distance to the fault is then computed automatically and displayed in meters on LCD screen.

Function

The audio frequency signal is passing through the cable conductor an electromagnetic field of sending frequency is developed around on the conductor. When the search coil axis is passing in the developed field, it will sense the field and given to the receiver unit. The receiver amplifies that signal and indicates in terms of maximum bar-graph and sound in headphone on the cable. When the search coil is going away from the field the signal indication and sound will reduce.

Working Principle

Bridge Mode

The equipment has menu driven insulation tester capable of giving IR test and displays insulation resistance in Meg Ohm. A healthy core / pair is used to get the loop resistance of the cable under test. When the faulty core / pair is connected to the equipment, balancing of the bridge is done automatically by the intelligent circuit incorporated in the equipment. However, the balancing can also be done manually in specific cases. After the balancing, the result of the fault distance from sending end is displayed on the screen.

The Cable Fault Pre-locator TFL8 is the latest micro-processor controlled, menu driven, digital technology to offer precise to locate fault distance in any type of metallic cables and easy to operate with friendly interface.

It is a portable cable fault locator, easy to use, single-phase unit for cable fault pre-location of short and open faults by using the Low Voltage Impulse method / Time Domain Reflection (TDR) method. 

Impulse Current method (ICM) is available and use for pre-location of low insulation or intermittent type cable faults by coupling with high voltage surge tester in low, medium and high voltage cables.

Working Principle

Low Voltage Impulse Method / Time Domain Reflectometer (TDR)

A narrow electromagnetic pulse of 5 nsec with a fast rise time is sent on the cable that reflects back from the fault point / far end where the impedance has changed. The velocity of propagation (VOP) for each cable depending on the cable dimension and di-electric material is set. The distance to the fault is then computed automatically and displayed in meters on the screen.

Impulse Current Method / ICM

A Surge tester applies DC high voltage and high energy surges across the fault to the cable under test that induces a breakdown or flash over across the fault point in the cable and the current transient is developed at the fault point.The transient waves travels back and forth between the surge tester and the fault point. The current transient is measured using a current transformer with a frequency response adequate to resolve only the edges of the current transient. The distance to the fault is then computed automatically and displayed in meters on the screen.

Working Principle

TDR

A narrow electromagnetic pulse with a fast rise time is sent in the cable that reflects back from the fault point /far end where the impedance has changed. The VOP for each cable depending on the cable dielectric material is set. The distance to the fault is then computed automatically and displayed on pre-locator. 

ICM

It is a current transient analysis method of pre-location of fault. During a breakdown or flashover at the fault, transient’s waves are generated that oscillate back to the source end which is utilized through a linear current coupler and store and displayed on pre-locator.

SIM

It is an arc stabilizing mode. Faults are stabilized by creating a temporary arc at the fault point through an arc reflection filter and reduce the resistance value of fault as short circuit, and displayed on pre-locator with reference graph. 

MIM

The Time Domain Reflectometer using a 200MHz transient recorder to record more than 3 measurements showing the fault position during only 1 high voltage impulse.

DECAY

It is a voltage transient analysis method of pre-location of fault. Using DC voltage, at a fault point voltage transients are generated that oscillate back to the source end which is utilized through a voltage divider coupler and stored and displayed on pre-locator.
